Things to Do in Hocking Hills

Known as a year-round hot spot for nature and outdoor enthusiasts, the Hocking Hills area lies primarily in Hocking County in southeast Ohio.

Cliffs, rock shelters, gorges and waterfalls decorate this dissected area of the Allegheny Plateau, where the most scenic areas have been turned into parks, nature preserves and protected forests.

Outdoor Activities

Go canoeing, rafting and kayaking in waters once traveled by early settlers and Native Americans; moonlight tours are available through Hocking Hills Canoe Livery.

Go horseback riding with guides, on trails, or on cattle and horse ranches, or choose rock climbing at Hocking State Forest. Explore treetops, fly above caves and rock cliffs, and get the best view of the Hocking River with zip line riding.

Women can participate in nature workshops provided exclusively for them with hiking, birdwatching, kayaking and Native American teachings and photography.

Hiking

Old Man’s Cave, the most popular part of the Hocking Hills area, has a 6-mile hiking course that connects three areas of the park.

Another hiking area, Ash Cave, has the distinction of being the largest recess cave in the state of Ohio, and Conkle’s Hollow Nature Preserve is the state’s deepest gorge, with a rugged and rocky valley floor covered in ferns and wildflowers.

Other hiking areas include the remote Cantwell Cliffs, Rock House and Cedar Falls.

Camping & Fishing

Fifteen camping areas lie within Hocking Hills, including: Caveman Retreats, Hocking River RV Park, Spotted Horse Ranch, Happy Hills Camp and Cabin, Hocking Hills Campground, Top O’ the Caves, Burr Oak State Park, The Yurt at Salt Creek Retreats, Smoke Rise Ranch House, Tar Hollow State Park, Old Man’s Cave, A W Marion State Park, Lake Hope State Park and At Boulders Edge Tipi Retreat.

For fishing enthusiasts, Lake Logan State Park is considered one of the best fishing lakes in the state.

In this day-use park with scenic picnic areas, try your hand at catching a bucket full of northern pike, catfish, bluegill, bass, saugeye and crappie.

Other Activities

Take a tour of Hocking Hills by plane or by train. Watch an outdoor historical drama called Tecumseh, which depicts the Ohio country of the early 1800s.

For golf course play, pick between miniature golf at the challenging Rempel’s Grove course (which also has a free petting zoo), rounds at the 18 hole Brass Ring Golf Club on hilly terrain, or the 18 hole and 71 par course at Ridge at Laurel Golf Club, with high ridges and deep valleys on mountainous terrain.
