Medical Colleges in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is home to several medical schools that house a variety of departments, allowing students to choose any discipline from anatomy to psychiatry to surgery.

Some offer undergraduate degrees, while others also offer postgraduate studies for determined students.

Clinical practice and examinations give students the benefit of hands-on learning and the ability to track their academic progress.

University of Jaffna

The University of Jaffna has a faculty that educates future health care professionals.

The school has several divisions, including anatomy, medicine, paediatrics, pharmacology, psychiatry and surgery. For the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees, students have 40 to 44 weeks of preclinical courses before going for clinical courses and para-clinical courses at the Teaching Hospital and Faculty.

University of Kelaniya

Located at Ragama in Sri Lanka, the University of Kelaniya’s Faculty of Medicine has approximately 1,000 students and over 200 staff.

Departments include anatomy, disability studies, medicine, medical microbiology, paediatrics, psychiatry, pharmacology, public health, parasitology and surgery.

The school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and the Department of Medicine is dedicated to research, much of which has been published in international journals.

University of Peradeniya

The University of Peradeniya’s Faculty of Medicine, situated at the school’s entrance on Galaha Road, educates 1,000 students and has well over 200 faculty members.

The university has a range of departments, including anaesthesiology, anatomy, community medicine, microbiology, paediatrics, pharmacology, psychiatry, surgery and medical education.

Students undergo clinical training at one of five teaching hospitals in the area.

University of Sri Jayewardenepura

Sri Lanka’s University of Sri Jayewardenepura houses a Faculty of Medical Sciences that offers undergraduate degrees in medicine, nursing, human biology, pharmacy and medical laboratory sciences, as well as a few postgraduate programs.

The school’s departments include anatomy, biochemistry, medicine, microbiology, paediatrics, pharmacology, psychiatry and surgery.
