Using American Credit Cards in Sri Lanka
If you have an upcoming trip to Sri Lanka, you are probably getting all of your facts straight and budgeting your finances. One question that you may be wondering is whether or not American credit cards will even work in Sri Lanka. The good news is that yes, they definitely will work overseas! However, there are certain things that you should keep in mind when using American business credit cards or general credit cards in Sri Lanka:
1. Be aware of any credit card foreign transaction fees
Unfortunately, many credit card companies charge cardholders a fee when the American card is used in a foreign country. For example, Visa and MasterCard charge a 1% fee for converting the purchase amount to American currency. The majority of other credit card companies charge between 1% and 2% for foreign purchases. Find out what fee (if any) your credit card company will charge you, and keep this in mind every time that you choose to charge a purchase in Sri Lanka.
2. Make your credit card issuer aware of your plans
If you fail to let your credit card issuer know about your upcoming plans to travel abroad, the unusual location may be flagged when you make a purchase in Sri Lanka. And this could cause the issuer to block any further charges on your card, as they will believe that your credit card (or the account information) has been stolen. While this isn’t a huge issue, as you can easily call your credit card issuer and clear up the misunderstanding, it’s still sure to take away from all you want to do in Sri Lanka.
3. Don’t sign any receipt not expressed in Sri Lankan currency
It can be difficult to convert the local currency into the American dollar—especially if you’re trying to do so while shopping in a foreign place. Some merchants take advantage of this difficulty by quoting the price in American dollars…but making the currency conversion at an uncompetitive exchange rate. This means that you end up paying more for the item than you should be paying. Avoid this by only signing receipts that have totals expressed in the local currency.
Those are just three tips that can help you when using your credit card in Sri Lanka. What other advice can you share?
