When you book your hoteles Venecia make sure you arrange to visit the Jewish Ghetto of Venecia. In 1516 AD, the Government of the Serenissima Repubblica issued special laws that created the first Ghetto in Europe. These Ghettos were a walled off area of the city where the Jewish population were forced to live. They were not allowed to leave from sunset to dawn each day and the area was closed by gates and watched by guards. On the walls surrounding the gated entrances marks from the iron hinges are still visible.
Jews were only allowed to participate in and practice only certain professions. This accounted for the many Jewish doctors since they were able to understand and study ancient Arab writings. They were the money lenders since Catholic religion made this practice forbidden. The Jews were also relegated to being the merchants, many times called “strazzarioli”, or rag sellers. The Ghetto of Venecia wee finally eliminated in 1797 when Napoleon conquered Venice.

Florence’s Jewish ghetto no longer exists, but the museum provides a history of the Jewish community in Florence from 1437 to the present. The ghetto was demolished at the end of the 19th century. The Synagogue of Florence, located next to the museum, is open to the public and definitely worth a visit.
